Boxcitement’s Birthday – October Box

Boxcitement the popular stationery and crafts subscription box is celebrating its first birthday and what a treat subscribers received this month!

We featured Boxcitement as our Startup of the Month back in January 2016, so its great to see these guys still developing their unique service for their happy army of subscribers.

As we did in our first review, we are delighted to welcome back our resident stationary addict Katie Halsall from the  Life of Kitty blog, to open up the Boxcitement Special Edition Birthday Box for October, over to you Katie...

Unboxing

Upon opening the box you’re hit with a bright notecard telling you the theme – Patternista – and a pretty little package waiting to be opened.

As you unfold each layer, more and more items appear, each fitting within the month’s theme. We’ve got a focus on patterns, so everything you see is bright, colourful and funky.

There is a good mixture of items in this box, with the majority lovingly handmade for Boxcitement to share. The four gift cards each have a different design, brightly coloured and with short quotes on two of them. Made from a thick card, they would definitely make a present look that extra special!

Boxcitement  : Patternista Theme  - Contents :

  • A printed tea towel
  • A set of pretty storage jar labels
  • A cute bookmark
  • A gorgeous handmade bracelet with glass patterned beads
  • Four patterned gift cards
  • A sheet of patterned decoupage paper
  • A sugar skull emery board
  • Some pretty ribbon

Ribbon and funky decoupage paper, along with the sticky jar labels bring a crafty side to the box. Perfect for those doing homemade presents or crafts. A notecard with a little birthday cupcake serves as a great reminder about the first birthday (and really is super cute!) and could also be used in crafts!

Everything included is of great quality (as usual!) and also useful (if you needed any more convincing!) so it’s a win-win situation all round!

Guest Review of Boxcitement written by
Katie Halsall from Life of Kitty

This review of the March Box from Boxcitement comes to you from Katie Halsall from Life of Kitty. In addition to her passion for photography, Katie is also a keen stationery and craft addict so was eager to see inside the March 2016 edition of Boxcitement.

What is Boxcitement?

Boxcitement is a subscription box containing a mystery assortment of collectibles, crafts, stationery and must have items from your favourite chic gift shop.

Subscribers receive a different surprise box full of hand-picked items lovingly gift wrapped and delivered each month for £18 including P&P.  Use the code RADAR10 for 10% off your first box. To give you an idea of the types of items you will receive, lets unbox the March Theme and take a closer look inside ....

Unboxing of Boxcitement

Boxcitement gives you a mixture of stationery, crafting and stylish gifts, all designed just for this box. Opening it up, the first thing you’ll spot is a bright notice letting you know what the month’s theme is and exactly what’s inside. There’s also information about a little competition run on Boxcitement’s social media pages. This is especially handy to get a little information about the products and where they came from.

Boxcitement March Box - Contents :

  • Two greeting cards with envelopes
  • A cute fabric embellished hanging beastie
  • A set of postcards complete with a Cadoozle Mini mechanical pencil
  • Stylish engraved acrylic and silver plated earrings in a matching gift box
  • Printed tissue paper
  • An exclusive laser-cut wooden bunny craft ready to push out and construct
boxcitement review

The items in the box are packaged neatly in a piece of tissue paper–giving you something to unwrap and adding just that little bit extra excitement to the box! As you uncover each layer, there’s always something new to see. The items themselves are packaged well, with similar things tied together and others in their own little box of bag.

boxcitement subscription box review

All items included feel high quality and durable. The wooden rabbit craft in this month makes a great activity for you or a friend, and the cute acrylic earrings would help to finish any outfit off. On the stationery side, the detail and colours in the greeting cards and prints make them really stand out and the extra stickers included are a nice touch. The prints especially would make a great addition to a gallery wall or shelf!

Startup of the Month : Boxcitement

startup+boxcitement
startup+boxcitement

To help provide some tips, ideas and inspiration to those of you thinking about starting your own subscription box business,  we aim to pick out a new subscription startup on our radar each month to find out a little bit more about the people behind the box.

This month we are pleased to feature Boxcitement as our UK startup of the month and answering our questions is Sean, Co-Founder and Management Mastermind behind Boxcitement.

boxcitment_surprise_box_main

What is Boxcitement?

Sean Co-Founder Boxcitement

Boxcitement is a creative monthly subscription box, aimed at people who love giving, receiving and wrapping gifts. It aims to surprise and delight people who can either keep the contents for themselves or re-gift them along with the premium stationery and wrapping accessories that we include – so we like to say the box is useful as well as lovely.

How much does it cost?

Sean Co-Founder Boxcitement

£15-£18 per month depending on length of subscription – you can pay monthly or save money by opting for a three, 6 or 12 month subscription. Boxes can also be purchased as one-offs for £20. All prices include UK P&P.

What makes Boxcitement different to other surprise gift boxes?

Sean Co-Founder Boxcitement

Our main point of difference is that all our products are designed by us in-house; we don’t commission other illustrators or designers or curate third party products which means our designs can only be found at Boxcitement and are produced in limited quantities. This hopefully appeals to anyone looking for something a bit different and exclusive – and allows us to come up with quirky and creative themes where the only limit is our imagination, and the size of the boxes we use! We do include items such as Sharpie pens and grosgrain ribbons which we curate but all designed items are exclusive to us. We make sure our themes and designs look very different from one month to the next, while maintaining a cohesive style that you can only achieve by keeping creative control. We combine traditional methods like letterpress printing with cutting edge techniques like laser cutting, and use premium papers and cards from artisan paper merchants, so our quality and attention to detail is something we pride ourselves on.

How did it all start and why a Subscription Box Business?

Sean Co-Founder Boxcitement

We are a small team all with creative backgrounds – from advertising and graphic design to fashion design and fine art – and we wanted to start a business that fulfilled us creatively, and gave us the opportunity to create products directly rather than for clients. We had seen how the subscription box model was growing in the US and was being introduced in the UK; it seemed a good opportunity to combine our creative skills with a growing and popular type of business. The targeted nature of the subscription box business also fits well with our knowledge of and belief in social media as a way to connect with our customers and grow the business.

What challenges have you faced on your journey so far?

Sean Co-Founder Boxcitement

With a limited marketing budget our biggest challenge has been to get our name out there as a new player in the subscription box market. We have contacted many reviewers, and now people are coming to us and asking to review our boxes, which has been a great outlet but we need to continually find ways of connecting with our potential customers. We care about finding suppliers we like working with - we have tried to work with local manufacturers wherever possible so we can get involved in the manufacturing process – a big thrill was visiting a Letterpress printer and watching our notecards being produced from start to finish. We continually strive to find people who are easy to work with and understand what we are trying to achieve.

What advice you would offer for people planning on launching their own subscription box business?

Sean Co-Founder Boxcitement

First off be prepared for lots of hours spent building the business beyond the idea. And allow for lots of boxes to be given away for reviews, competitions and giveaways – it’s all about getting your name out there and getting positive feedback so that customers can see what they are getting.

Which Boxcitement items have been your personal favourites?

Sean Co-Founder Boxcitement

Our personal favourites are the laser engraved wooden wing necklace we created for our lift off box, and a cute acrylic cloud brooch we made for our ‘head in the clouds’ theme. Both have proved popular with our customers too.
